Earlier this year, seven artists were commissioned to respond to the history, architecture and collections of Ilkeston's Erewash Museum in an exhibition entitled Future Past.
The same show now makes its way to Nottingham's newest independent exhibition space, the Hand And Heart Gallery, for a second run under a new title, Ensemble. Not satisfied with simply moving the works from one venue to another, the artists have allowed the contents to mutate in transit.
At this point, how the pieces have changed is unknown, but the works offer an eclectic mix of themes and approaches. They range from the dark explorations of Charlotte Pratley to Hugh Dichmont and Chie Hosaka's archive of unseen artefacts from the life of Ilkeston-born gardener and amateur scientist Horace Jonathan Marney.
Rachel Eite offers bird-like flocks of suspended fabric, placed outside as though gathered for a mysterious migration. The oddly-named Frillip Moolog, alter ego of artist Kirsty E Smith, continues her effort to capture the excitement of children interacting with objects for the first time in a new textile sculpture, Madeleine, inspired by DH Lawrence and the modern Ilkeston fabrics manufacturer Baltex.
With Samuel Mercer and Peter Norman rounding out a line-up offering works that range from high-tech installation to photography, kinetic sculpture to quirky assemblage, Ensemble promises a cross-section of contemporary approaches in Nottingham.
